frozen lemonade -
there’s a moment of
utter silence that comes
a split second before the racers
fly right by you.
it’s a moment that
causes a skip in your heartbeat,
as if you’re wondering if
someone will stop.
cade and i would
clutch our frozen lemonades
to our chests and
listen for that
breath of silence.
there isn’t a whisper as
every single person is
collectively holding their
breaths, thinking the
same things that we are.
cade and i have
orange foam plugs in our ears
with noise-canceling headphones
over top, bags of
three model cars each in
bags at our feet,
ready to be added
to the collection the
moment we arrive home.
it’s frigid outside,
and maybe it’s boring to
others, but with
frozen lemonades in our
hands, the two of us water,
and listen, and wait for the
silence before the roar.
this is our
first draft
and
final copy
all in one take.
