After an inhospitable visit, Kim Sakkat offered to write the name of Master Chŏng’s house on the empty signboard. He wrote:
Kwi-nak-tang (noble-joyful-house)
Master Chŏng was very pleased.
Later a neighboring literatus examined the sign and explained the true meaning. Read backwards it becomes
tang-nak-kwi (donkey)
The radical of the chŏng character in the master’s name is like the long ears of a donkey. In traditional humor the family is often referred to as the donkey Chŏngs.
