Records of all sorts: death, business, religious and more, which are preserved on papyrus in the dry climate indicate that names underwent a transition from traditional Egyptian form to Christian form, with Coptic language equivalents of Peter, Mary, John, etc. becoming predominant or significant (depending on the area) by the fourth century. The Islamic conquest of Egypt in the seventh century brought on a new set of names.
