The canonical gospels are guaranteed to be free of moral or theological error. At least two non-canonical teaching documents of the early Church, the Didache and the Shepard of Hermas, are used in the Catechism as official teaching. Pope Benedict XVI quoted from the Gospel of Thomas in his Easter vigil Mass of 2012. Non-canonical documents may or may not be free of error, they are simply not guaranteed. Within the canonical gospels a person may make both morally correct and incorrect acts, this occurred with both Judas and Peter, and any human for that matter.
