Chapter 36

Christ’s Ascension

After Jesus had spoken these things to His disciples, the Bible records that He was taken up in the sky into the clouds and out of their sight. They gazed up to heaven as He went upward. The Lord went to be seated on the right hand of God. Two angels appearing as men asked the disciples why they were standing there gazing up to heaven. They told them that this same Jesus would one day return from heaven coming in like manner in the clouds. Jesus is the only person in the New Testament who ascended into heaven. In the Old Testament, God took Enoch and Elijah to heaven before they died. The difference is that Jesus has received His glorified body, but Enoch and Elijah will not receive their glorified bodies until we all do at the resurrection on the last day.

30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matt. 24:30)

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. (1 Thess. 4:16-17)
