EPILOGUE
Eight months later…
Wendy was approached in her son’s nursery by Annie. “What is it?”
“You have a visitor. He says he’s here with a message from your father Henry.”
It had been a week since she had given birth. The labor pain had started earlier and she suspected it was because of the link she had with her father. Something had happened to him then but she had had no idea what. She couldn’t cross over on her own and even if she could, she had responsibilities here not to mention her own son. Jane was coping well with being apart from her brother and with the loss of her parents. Wendy wasn’t even sure she understood that they were gone yet. Cali Alice’s daughter was also doing well. She hadn’t known if she had been obligated to raise her like the others fortunately her family took her away to be raised with her own family.
So much had changed. Gorham had been murdered and she had yet to figure out who did it. She wished she had those skilled detectives in her world but it was then that she realized her world was seriously lacking. Nathan was murdered by Sidney in a fit of rage when she thought he was the one who had murdered Gorham. Sidney had been executed for the murder of a king. Everything that happened lead to being the only leader for Tyrone.
She had been queen for a while now but there was still unrest within the kingdom. Some did not see her as being a fit leader especially when at time she talked back to her spirits. They thought she was mentally unstable but who wouldn’t if they did not see what you saw. She had heard talks of giving Martin her throne as Martin had her powers that made her especially attuned to the position. She wouldn’t fault them for doing that. She had lost both Joel and Martin. Joel hadn’t returned yet with Alice and Wendy feared that they were simply waiting for people’s resolve to have a change of leadership before they could come back and sweep it from her. Martin as usual was madly in love with Jared and his own resolve to stay by her side were weakening and very soon he was going to start championing Jared’s ideas. Even now he had pitched a few ideas Wendy could tell were from Jared and yet she could do nothing about it other than forbid the two of them from seeing each other. Other than that, which she knew she was not cruel enough to do, she had nothing else to pull Martin to her side.
She took one more look at her son then went to meet the visitor. His back was turned to her. She couldn’t tell much from his profile except for his hair color which was blond. He had on black jeans and a black T-shirt. On his feet were white sneakers. He was well built but other than that she could tell nothing else except that he wasn’t a wizard. Even with he own weakened powers, she could tell he was not and if he were, Martin would already be there.
“Excuse me,” she called out. He turned suddenly as if he was surprised then saw her and bowed. “You don’t need to do that. You are not one of my subjects.”
“Very well.” He stood up straighter and his eyes locked with hers. He had silver eyes. They were startling. “I’m sorry about the eyes. I have colored contacts with me. I’ll put them on if it is too much for you.”
“No, this is who you are. There’s no need to hide it.” She walked forward and stopped before him. “You said you have news from Henry?”
“Not from, but about Henry. I’m sorry to tell you,” he paused as he watched her reaction. “Henry is dead.” He expected her to deny it. To tell him he was lying. And he expected her to throw a tantrum and scream at him to leave or go kill himself. At the very least he expected her to demand proof. What he didn’t expect was the quiet acceptance as tears started to flow down her cheeks. “Wendy? Are you alright?”
She tried to blink the tears away and force a smile on her face. “I thought I was alone before. Now I don’t even have anywhere I can take refuge in. I’m utterly alone now.”
“I’m sorry.”
“How did he die?” she asked as she wiped the tears from her cheeks though they kept running down her cheeks.
“He was murdered. I don’t know who he was but I saw his face clearly.”
“The indestructible Henry Clay was murdered?” She gave a short slightly hysterical laugh that made him want to take cautious steps away from her. The tears finally stopped not that she was done crying but there were things she had to know first and then go cry in private. “You were there?”
“Yes.”
“Why? Why were you there and why didn’t you stop whoever did this?” “I was there to kill him myself.”
“What?” Wendy asked in surprise. That was the last thing she was expecting. She took a step back ready to defend herself.
“Don’t worry, it had nothing to do with you. In fact, I didn’t even know you existed until then. I didn’t stop whoever it was because I was too late. Personally I hate the fact that he was the one who did it but I had never met Henry. I had to see him before he was gone so instead of going after the murderer, I approached his dying body. He gave me his memories, some of them anyway, before he died. I know it’s hard to believe but I’m not here to kill you or do you any harm.”
“Then why are you here?” Wendy asked suspiciously. “Because I’m your brother.”
