Glossary of names, places, and magical things.
Aelwyd, Queen of the Red Dragons.
Blaenoraid – Chief city of the Land of Trymyll. The seat of the Elder of Elders. In British and Welsh folklore, it was Camelot, the home of King Arthur – Translated from the Welsh, The Castle of the Capital.
Blemonpuss – a mythical creature that looked like a cross between a cat and a demon. Not an animal to be trifled with.
Cantrip - A very minor spell, taught to a beginning apprentice to build his confidence. Any human can perform a cantrip. These include cooling water, lighting a candle, or calling a pet over without speaking.
Cold iron - The one bane of all magic. It prevents magical energy from flowing and locks spells in place. A magician chained by cold iron is powerless, and cold iron edged steel weapons can kill most supernatural creatures. Magic swords are made by setting the dweomer while the iron is still hot from the forge; once the metal has cooled, the enchantment is locked in place.
Dark magic - (also called Black Magic or the Dark Arts.) Use of the powers of darkness, or the taking of life for magic power. Its use is shunned by most wizards.
Dragon Slayer - A magical sword made by the dwarfs, folding the metal one thousand times before finally shaping and honing the sword which was then enchanted by the elves. It is so sharp it can cut through stone, metal and even dragon scales. It will protect the bearer from spells by absorbing them into itself. It has a wisdom that it can impart to the holder. It can only be owned by one pure in heart and deed, and a direct descendant of the original owner Giamillus-Weorod. That person is Glynda Guilliams-Erwood, Guardian Wizard.
Dragons Blue - Blue dragons are the most dangerous, they have no scruples and will eat you as soon as look at you. It was believed that they normally disguised themselves as black cats, so never trust a Blue Dragon, and never trust a black cat. It was also believed that they were not very magical and could only hold their shapes for a few minutes before reverting to a dragon again, the little magic they have is dark, very dark. They also tend to be very stupid. Though this description may change as the book progresses.
Dragons Golden - Golden dragons are the most magically powerful and if you can align yourself with a Golden dragon, you will share their powers. Golden Dragons are always for good and never evil. They can change their size and shape, their normal ‘disguise’ is a sparrowhawk.
Dragons Purple - Purple dragons are of course the most cultured, intelligent, good looking and modest of all dragons. Our alternative shape is of a small dog of indeterminate breed.”
Dragons Red - Red dragons are to be sought; they are very magical, faithful, trustworthy and have longer lives than any other dragons. Their metamorphic other is a hen or cock according to their gender.
Dweomer -The permanent spell set into an object by a wizard.
Elder of Elders – Also called The Elder. Head of the Seven Elders of Trymyll. The most powerful wizard in the land. For many years, no one knew his name, no one saw his face, and few had heard him speak. He is just, The Elder. But it was revealed, after a sequence of problems caused by this secrecy, that he is Llewellyn the Brave.
Enchanter - A magician who specialises in incantation. Most wizards are enchanters.
Familiar - A psychic bond between a human magician and a creature. Familiars share each other’s feelings, powers, and traits.
Flintock the Elder – Real name Funsan Njau Osei. A full and powerful wizard, just below the seven High Elders, appointed as a High Elder without portfolio, Flintock has never risen to the top rank purely because he is not political and has no wish to be so. As a wizard, he can out magic all of the High Elders but remains modest and caring.
Gate - A spell used for getting from one place to another quickly. Used by wizards who cannot apparate or are too scared to apparate.
Glynda Guilliams-Erwood, at fifteen years old, was the youngest Guardian ever to be called. An orphan fostered by Gwendoline and Llewellyn.
Gwen (Gwendolyn) Jones - Wife of Llewellyn the Brace, (The Elder of Elders), mother to Jonathan and Thomas. Gwen is a Guardian Wizard, making her one of the most magically powerful wizards, more powerful than Llewellyn and even more powerful than the Master...
Howel – A purple dragon
Hadley-Smythes – An incantational couple created by Howel to ‘foster’ Tom for the last two months he was at home.
High Elder Aneta Stepanek - Goleuedigaeth, the city of enlightenment.
High Elder Asmodeus - The dark wizard of Castell yr Tywyll.
High Elder Sugreev Sridhar - from Dolydd, the farm castle.
High Elder Govannon Staley - of the Elven community, Castle Mynydd.
High Elder Lintang Ananas - from Wrth y Môr, or castle on the sea.
High Elder Sugreev Sridhar - of Gwir, Castle of Truth.
Incantation - One of the two major Arts of Magic, in which a long spell is recited and/or runes are drawn out, precisely using the NAME of an object to affect it.
Kraken - a cephalopod-like sea monster of giant size, capable of dragging a ship down to the depths of the ocean.
Llewellyn the Brave – The Elder of Elders, husband to Gwen, father of Jonathan and Thomas. The most powerful wizard in the land except for the Guardians.
Manticore – A legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the head of a human, the body of a lion and a tail of venomous spines similar to porcupine quills, if necessary, the spines can be shot like arrows, thus making the Manticore a lethal predator. It eats its victims whole, using its triple rows of teeth, and leaves no bones behind.
Máthair - Queen of the Golden Dragons, mother of all dragons.
Nephilim - Giants, reputably fallen angels. Mentioned in the Bible before the flood of Noah, see Genesis 6 vs 1-4.
Phobl – Someone with no magical powers at all.
Songhai Chen - A mystic Wizard and Guardian, over nine hundred years old he is the most powerful wizard of the age. He has powers that other wizards cannot even dream of. He can receive echoes from the future and although incredibly wise, he speaks in riddles and parables which are difficult to understand. He is not bound by time and space and can travel to different times and dimensions should he wish.
Spellweaver - A magician who specialises in spell weaving. One of the two magic arts, the other being incantation. A spellweaver uses telekinesis to move threads of force into new patterns, which in turn redefine reality.
Trygall – hideous looking beast with scales like a fish, flaming red hair and terrible looking teeth, brown and sharp like barbed ivory thorns, long claw like nails at the end of sinuous fingers and a look of cold hate on its face. However, Trygalls are benign and befriend humans, Trygalls are firemasters and happen to be particularly good cooks.
Trymyll - Trymyll was a land of seven cities. Each city had a castle at its centre and the city and surrounding lands were overseen by a chief elder, each chief elder had seven other elders working and reporting to them and each of the seven elders had seven wizards working for and with them.
