Smart storage systems

For energy efficiency and easy transportation they could be housed in containers. And as per the demand they could be mobilised over trucks directly to the marketing places too. The unused containers could be mobilised to the places where there is more demand. For storage of dry items the non air conditioned containers could also be installed with humidity controllers.

One of the container storage systems could be allocated for seed storage. This gives an added advantage for the famers to quickly access seeds and also replant in case of drought conditions.

Energy efficient cold storage rooms could be created in every village, but the management and maintenance could be problem, as the the demand for storage of produce could fluctuate seasonally and also every year.

These storage rooms / containers should have the following systems:

  • Smart space allocation systems for types of goods
  • Smart and transparent monitoring systems for the farmers and other stakeholders
  • Smart internal environment control systems Sensors such as Temperature, Relative Humidity and Gas sensors are very much useful
  • Smart pest management systems - Identification and prevention of pests.

Some of the smart seed storage interventions tested in OFDA-funded On-Farm Seed Storage Project: 2009–2013
