#9. What Adults Should Know about Teen Drug Problems

Teen drug addiction is on the rise and this is something which is quite worrisome. People are now working on the solutions to this problem. It is important that if you have a teenager at home, you are aware of the overall situation about the issue and also be aware about the facts of the lives of your teenager. There are two main factors that trigger the drug problem in the teens of this generation and they will be looked upon in detail in the following lines.

The first thing that gets teenagers into the drug problem is peer pressure. As the parent of any teenager would agree, in this age group the opinions of one’s peers matters more than that of the family. When they have to compare the opinions or make some decision, the opinion of their friends is going to weigh more in comparison to that of the parents and the rest of the family. Given the conditions outside, there is a lot of negative influence going around which is most of the time responsible for the fact that otherwise good kids end up taking up drugs.

In order to ensure that all of this peer pressure mixed with  the identity struggle does not end up in a drug problem and ruin the life of your child completely, it is essential to make sure that you are giving them the time and attention that is required by them at this stage of their life.

Added to this, you should note that it is not just about the attention, but the way that it is worked around. Being overprotective and showing it is not going to help in most cases as during the teen years the kids are looking for some independence as well. With all the hormones and confusion in play, your attention can prove to be quite an irritating addition.

The other factor that usually results in a drug problem is emotional imbalance and this one is not just caused by the hormonal change but because of the problems that the kids might be facing either at home or school. No family is perfect and they are not supposed to be perfect either. However, what needs to be done is that matters are handled in an open manner so that no hidden and hurt feelings are left hidden to breed resentment or hate. The very sensitive types end up harming themselves through their drug habit.
