Chapter 11

HOW TO CHOOSE A KARATE SCHOOL

Karate is a way of life that teaches the importance of choos-ing carefully. The selection of the right Karate school requires that you make a careful choice. There are many different kinds of Karate schools, and you must sometimes visit more than one to find the right one for you.

I think that it is important to see how the instructor teaches so you fan see what kind of person he or she is. If the instructor is interested only in teaching self-defense, then you will only be taught how to fight. If the instructor is interested in helping you understand yourself and interested in helping you end conflict by nonviolent means, then, in my view, he or she is teaching Karate in a helpful way - a way that will help create peaceful relationships between people. My advice is to use the following checklist as you visit schools and observe classes:

1. Ask the students what they think of the classes.

2. Observe the classes for yourself.

3. Ask the teachers many questions and observe how they respond to your asking questions.

4. Ask if you can try a class or two.

5. Be aware of the "vibrations" you get from the instructors.

Are you afraid? Do you feel you can trust them? Listen to your feelings.

6. Ask how much lessons cost and what the payment 71

schedule is.

7. Look around at all the options. Don't feel pressured into taking lessons at one particular school.

Trust what you see and feel. If you take your time, you will find the right teacher and school. Choose with care.
