A WISE WOMAN WISHES TO BE NO ONE’S ENEMY; A WISE WOMAN REFUSES TO BE ANYONE’S VICTIM
~ MAYA ANGELOU
My cousin and I were only a few years apart, and our paths in life were different too. After my family relocated to Florida in 1979, we lost touch and I hadn’t heard from or of her for many years. It wasn’t until I returned to the States, then received news about her condition was when I contacted her.
We spoke as though we saw each other yesterday. I called almost every night until she was unable to make conversation, so I texted smiling and sunny emojis letting her know I was here thinking of her.
One night, she shared with me her opinion towards me, “I never understood you and that made me not like you, but now I see who you really are. Don’t ever change.”
We were never close, but that at moment, we were the closet we’d ever been.
My cousin fought a courageous battle and now she’s at peace. Her spirit visits me from time to time through strangers and small miracles throughout my day .
It’s her way of letting me know she’s thinking of me.
