Chapter four

Top 7 Reasons Why People Become Poor

Again? I don’t know when Kwame Frank and his wife Akua Silvia will stop fighting. It’s been two weeks, and all I hear from their room are arguments and insults.

Wonders shall never end, said Adwoa Bernice, a neighbor of Akua Silvia. I must enquire from Akua Silvia because I cannot allow Kwame Frank to abuse my friend.

The following day, Adwoa Bernice rushed to Akua Silvia’s room because she saw Kwame Frank had moved out of the house.

Adwoa Bernice: My friend, what is happening in this house?

Akua Silvia: Hmmm, my husband (Kwame Frank) will kill me ooo Adwoa Bernice: Tell me, what is bothering you?

Akua Silvia: My husband is making life unbearable in this house (she starts sobering).

Adwoa Bernice: Don’t cry, don’t cry! I came here because of you. So, your husband is acting irresponsibly?

Akua Silvia: Adwoa, for the past week, my husband does not provide money for housekeeping, and you know my condition. I am not working. I depend on Frank for survival. My third child always complains about the food. What should I do?

Adwoa Bernice: Oh, I get you, so this is why your husband has been shouting at you every day?

Akua Silvia: My sister, what should I do? I need help. My husband will not listen to advise. When he comes home, he expects food. I’m stranded in this marriage and even thinking of leaving my husband. What should I do? Please advise me.

Analyzing the situation of Akua Silvia and Kwame Frank, their challenges are weak finances and poor communication. Although it is not good for Akua Silvia to depend totally on his husband for survival, Kwame Frank should act like a “man.”

If Kwame Frank takes responsibility, peace will prevail in the house. From my research, I learned that the main problems in marriage are finances, communication, and sex.

In the case of Akua Silvia and Kwame Frank, the main issue is weak financing.

Many couples and families face the challenge of Akua Silvia and Kwame Frank. I will share the top seven reasons why people become poor and provide you with some remedies to break these “seeds.”

I will use the Holy Scriptures as my reference points because they are the best wisdom keys. Experiences are good, but the Holy Bible is superior to experiences and human wisdom.

Poverty is in dimensions. The lack of money is a section of poverty. It doesn’t matter how wealthy you are; if you have little or no knowledge about the system of money, you are poor financially.

Real poverty is your mindset, beliefs, and ideology (philosophy). You will become poor even if someone gives you a huge sum of money to start living because you don’t know how to make, manage and multiply money.

Money is important, but it is not the ultimate. We can use money to do many things in life, but it has limitations. Money is not only about printed papers and coins. Money has different forms.

 Your talent is money.

 Wisdom is money.

 Influence is money.

 Time is money.

 Power is money.

 Knowledge is money.

 The relationship is money.

 Good health is money.

 Character and integrity are money.

 Technology is money.

 Reputation is money.

Money is an invisible product. The absence of printed papers and coins should not make you hopeless because there are various ways of acquiring money. As I stated that your gifts, relationships, character, wisdom, knowledge, good health, products, time, and technology are money, you can channel them profitably to become resourceful in life.

You must know that some bad habits and unnecessary expensive lifestyles can make you poor. If you lack wisdom, you become poor (meditate on Proverbs 4:7).

Our daily habits and attitudes create our future.

It doesn’t matter how gifted, knowledgeable and famous you are; you can fail if you have a bad attitude toward life. Numerous celebrities have become insignificant in life because they lack knowledge.

They were prosperous in the early stage but became poor in the end. Some people even commit suicide in their vulnerable season because they cannot stand the shame and depression.

In this chapter, I will share the top seven biblical reasons people are poor.

Knowing these truths will help you escape the path of the poor. Applying the wisdom keys in this book will elevate you from the prison of poverty to the palace of wealth.

As I stated, physical cash is not the only way to determine a man’s worth. There are many factors to consider when analyzing a man’s wealth. Below are the top seven reasons why you are poor. I will make them short so that you can grasp the wisdom keys.

1. Because you are lazy

How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Proverbs 6:9-11

I have not seen a lazy wealthy man in life before. A lazy person might become wealthy because of inheritance. If a lazy man becomes wealthy, he is born into a rich family.

As stated in the oracles of truth, people who love sleeping become poor. If you don’t love work, you will become poor. As simple as that. It is not a curse. No reasonable person will supply your needs and wants if you don’t provide value or solve his problem.

 Are you a lazy person?

 Do you love sleeping?

 What type of work are you doing? (legal or illegal job).

 Do you work effectively and efficiently?

 Do you love giving excuses during work days?

Think through because laziness is one of the key factors to financial poverty. It doesn’t matter the anointing and grace you carry; if you are lazy, poverty will dominate you. Meditate on these Holy scriptures for more profound revelations.

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty…

Proverbs 20:13

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

Proverbs 10:4

2. Because you love food

Much food is in the tillage of the poor…

Proverbs 13:23

As human beings, we need food and water to sustain the body. We live to eat; we don’t eat to live. In other words, our life is not totally dependent on food and water.

We can survive for some days without food and water because our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus said a man should not live by bread alone (see Matthew 4:4).

We can survive without food and water for some days, so we can fast and pray.

Some people cannot live without food for six hours. They are constantly eating and drinking.

As a result of the eating disorder, they have bulimia and strange diseases. Child of God, if you love too much food, you will become poor because the body needs some rest to work effectively and efficiently.

Overeating can make you ill because some food contains poisonous substances.

When your mind is always on food, you kill your creativity and remain in your comfort zone (poverty state).

If you are trapped in your comfort zone, you will not make decisions to break out from the poverty mindset. There is time for everything. If you always think about food, poverty will become your friend (meditate on Ecclesiastes on 3:1-9).

3. Because you hate instructions.

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Proverbs 13:18

One of the annoying people you can ever meet is people who do not know (ignorant) yet refuse knowledge. If you think you know everything, you will remain where you are because your knowledge determines your productivity.

You can only give what you have (wisdom, knowledge, and wealth). If you are not disciplined in life, you attract poverty. If nobody can advise you, you remain in the prison of poverty, shame, and stagnation.

Like a child who thinks all Africans are ignorant, such a person harms himself because that is what he thinks. Like a sheep without a shepherd, it lives at the mercy of wild wolves.

 Do you have the mindset that no one can teach you anything?

 Are you disciplined in life?

 Do you reject and mock people’s wisdom and knowledge?

 Are you so proud that no one can advise you?

 Are you blinded by your pride and ego?

 Do you rely only on your knowledge without considering God's wisdom and wise people's counsel?

Think through because poverty and shame welcome people who hate sound wisdom and godly instructions. Meditate on this holy scripture for more profound revelation.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Proverbs 14:12

4. Because you love pleasure with all your heart.

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

Proverbs 21:17

As social beings, we need time for ourselves, family, and loved ones. However, time mismanagement, greediness, and wrong priorities can lead to financial poverty.

Have you ever asked yourself why God gave us two ears, two eyes, one mouth, two hands, and two legs? God is wisdom. You are likely to crush if you try to walk with your two legs simultaneously.

If you try to look into a bottle with your two eyes simultaneously, you will crush it.

You will choke yourself if you try to eat with your two hands simultaneously.

There is time for everything.

Machines even become tired and break down when used for a long time. If you are the type that always seeks happiness, you will be poor. As stated by the Holy Scriptures (see Proverbs 21:17), anyone that loves pleasure will be poor.

 Do you love chasing women, ladies, and prostitutes for pleasure?

 Do you love chasing men, guys, and womanizers for pleasure?

 Are you always looking for someone to make you happy in life?

If yes to any of these questions, I welcome you to the prison of poverty (meditate on Proverbs 31:3). Learn to manage your time and mind because pleasure-seeking people fall into the trap of financial poverty.

While others are busy doing something profitable with their lives, you will seek acceptance and pleasure. Think through; there is time for everything. Meditate on Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 and this Holy Scripture for more profound revelation.

A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

Proverbs 11:3

5. Because you are carnal.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Proverbs 23:21

I have observed that people who love alcohol and food are vulnerable to wicked people and hostile environments. People who eat anywhere and anything presented to them and drink a lot of alcoholic beverages become poor.

The money that should have been used to start a profitable business or invest in a resourceful venture will be used unwisely. Drinking too many alcoholic beverages can make you think abnormally because the substance within the drink has side effects.

Gluttony and drunkenness can make your life miserable. If you love food and alcohol, you will become attractive to visionless people who will help you spend your money.

Resourceful people will not connect with you if you are a drunkard and glutton.

People will be pointing evil hands at you. You can lose your integrity, reputation, and value in the workplace, house, church, and neighborhood because of your drunkenness and gluttony.

Some evil people can even poison your food and alcoholic drink. You will spend anyhow and anywhere because the alcohol will disorganize your mind and activities. Think through.

 Are you a glutton?

 Are you a drunkard?

If you don’t love poverty, hate alcohol and gluttony. Check the lives of pigs and other animals that love food and examine their end. Analyze the lives of drunkards in your neighborhood because you are likely to end like them if you don’t repent and seek deliverance.

6. Because you hide your sins

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Proverbs 28:13

Sin is one of the deadliest seeds in the life of humankind. Willful and consistent sin can harden your heart and make you sadistic and demon-possessed. Sin opens the portal for evil spirits to access your life.

Sin can create a long gap between you and the Holy Spirit (meditate on Isaiah 59:1-3). As stated in the Holy Scriptures, people who cover their evil deeds or live in secret sin will not prosper.

Evil spirits can hijack your blessings because they have legal ground. Your evil deeds have authorized them to stop the blessings of God from coming to you.

 Are you living in willful sin?

 Are you hiding some evil seeds in your life?

Evil spirits can see your evil deeds because they are monitoring spirits. Your family and friends may not see your evil deeds, but God sees them. Repent from any conscious evil habits because until the seed of evil is uprooted, the demons will stop your blessings (prosperity).

Remember, sin opens the portal to poverty. It is not a curse. Until you repent from your wickedness, God and His angels hold the blessings (prosperity)!

7. Because you follow people of no value.

He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

Proverbs 28:19

The friends you associate with significantly impact your life because their words have power over you (meditate on 1 Corinthians 15:33, Proverbs 18:21, 2

Corinthians 6:14-18). If the people you walk with are going nowhere, you will end up with them.

You will also go nowhere because they have no vision for their lives. Christ Jesus said, a blind man cannot lead the blind (see Luke 6:39). When you follow a blind man, you will fall into a pit because his sense of sight is not working.

Living in a visionless environment (church, workplace, and home) can make you poor because the atmosphere affects decisions. If the people around you have a poverty mindset, you will end up like them. If you surround yourself with wicked people, you will also become wicked because of ungodly soul ties.

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

Proverbs 22:24-25

If you surround yourself with people of vision, you will become visionary because you create a godly soul tie with them. Sometimes, breaking from specific associations and relationships is difficult because of the time and resources you have invested.

However, you must know that your association determines your future. Break out from the unprofitable relationship and dark environment with wisdom to start a new life.

If you fail to separate from unhealthy and toxic relationships, you put your life and those connected to you in great danger. The Holy Scriptures stated that you would encounter poverty if you follow worthless people (see Proverbs 28:19).

 Who is your friend?

 Who advises you?

 Who do you share your vision, goals, plans, and purpose with?

 Is your surrounding positively or negatively impacting you?

 Is your friend (s) adding value to you?

 Is your friend drowning your vision and goals in life?

Some friends and loved ones are there to help you emotionally, financially, spiritually, socially, and physically. Identify these people and learn how to live with them in wisdom but don’t associate with people who are not adding value to your life.

Be it financial, emotional, spiritual, social, physical, or intellectual. Examine your friends and loved ones and amend because worthless people will make you poor.

Meditate on the Holy Scripture for more wisdom keys.

…he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

Proverbs 28:19
