The Barcelona Beach Guide – It’s Time to Hit the Beach

Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia in Spain, and it is the second largest city in the country. Thousands of travelers come to Barcelona to see the sights of the city, like the UNESCO world heritage site of Antonio Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, and museums like the National Museum of Art of Catalonia. People come to Barcelona to enjoy Spanish tapas, and Spanish wines and drinks, such as Sangria.

However, many people might not realize that Barcelona has 9 different beaches within the city limits. Here are just a few reasons why people should visit the beach on their next trip to Barcelona.

Beat the heat – go for a swim

On a hot summer day, even La Sagrada Familia can seem unattractive, and there is no better way to beat the heat than to go for a cool, refreshing swim.

With nine different beaches to choose from, including Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella, Llevant, Somorrostro, Barceloneta, Sant Miquel, and San Sebastian Beach, there is no shortage of beaches for people to enjoy a swim at.

Clean beaches

When the 1992 Summer Olympics came to Barcelona, the city went through a huge tourism transformation. The city invested money to develop beaches along its nearby Mediterranean coast.

Cleanup initiatives were undertaken to clean up the beaches and seawater. Today, people can swim in the clean Mediterranean waters in one of Barcelona’s nine different beaches.

Sports and activities

For many people, visiting the beach means the chance for games and activities, and, with 4.8 kilometers (almost 3 miles) of wide sandy beaches in Barcelona, there is no shortage of space for games and sports at the beach.

Most Barcelona beaches have sporting areas, kids’ activity areas, and volleyball pitches. Of course, there are also watersports available at many beaches, such as jet skiing and windsurfing.

Easy access

When people think of going to the beach, they might envision having to pack up a vehicle and drive for several hours, but this is not the case in Barcelona. All of the city’s beaches are accessible by public transit via the metro, tram, or bus and offers several facilities for the handicapped for easy access.

People visiting Barcelona can buy a 2, 3, 4, or 5-day pass that is good for all public transportation in the city, making a getaway to the beach an affordable way to spend the day. For people who have a vehicle, the beaches in Barcelona also have on-site parking.

Restaurants and bars

Visiting the beach in Barcelona is not just about swimming in the sea, or playing volleyball on the pitch. Several of the beaches in Barcelona have restaurants and bars, which means that people can enjoy a drink and Spanish tapas while still experiencing the fun and excitement of visiting the beach.

Barcelona is a great city to visit thanks to its history, culture, food, art, and entertainment; but the city also has great, clean beaches with easy access via public transportation. With great swimming, sand, lots of activities, and restaurants and bars on site, going to the beach is a must.
