Music Museum (Museu de la Musica)

The Music Museum of Barcelona opened the doors to the public in 2007 in the building of L’Auditori (the concert hall known as auditorium) and showcases a collection of nearly 500 musical instruments from various cultures and periods, which is considered the most important in Spain.

The exhibition is divided into several fields which are enriched with audiovisual materials containing music, text and images, inviting the visitor to discover the world of music and discover the history about how civilizations used the music as an expression and communication vehicle.

You’ll be able to hear Pau Casal’s cello and an Indian sarangi, as well as excerpts of works by Albéniz for guitar and piano. To the Barcelona Music Museum belongs one of the most important collections of classical guitars, with some instruments made by Antonio de Torres, the foremost Spanish guitar maker.

Other highlights include keyboard instruments such as the organ of Perez Molero, the harpsichord of Zell and the claviorgan of Hauslaib. The interactive gallery allows the visitor to play some musical instruments and is particularly suitable for families with children.

During your visit to the Music Museum you will learn about the elements that constitute music, starting from ancient civilizations, and progressively discovering the evolution over time, until the industry of sound in the 19th century as well as new styles and technologies from the 20th century.

There is also an exhibition that runs parallel to the collections named “The Permanence of Sound” that explains the need of the society to record and reproduce music by using diverse supports, from writing music in a paper to the most advanced technologies we use today.

The Music Museum of Barcelona has three cultural heritage collections and archives, like the instrumental collection, the historic archive collection and the sound collection, derived from donations, some legacies and also from acquisitions.

The visitor can tour the Music Museum guided by various thematic itineraries, like Orpheus which is the main itinerary designed for general public, and Little Orpheus which is oriented to school groups and families.
