MIDI Meaning

This allows you to make note dependant symbols (such as accents and staccato) affect the actual MIDI Events, so that accents make notes louder, staccato symbols make notes shorter, etc. In the MIDI Meaning dialog you set up which symbols have what effect on the score. Then any note dependant symbols that you add will automatically change the corresponding MIDI notes as specified.

P MIDI Meaning is a “destructive” function, meaning that the notes will be permanently changed (as opposed to the Playback parameters in the Inspector, for example). However, if you later delete the symbols attached to the notes, the notes will be restored to their original length and velocity.

Setting up the MIDI Meaning Dialog

1. Pull down the Score menu and select MIDI Meaning from the Global Settings submenu. The MIDI Meaning dialog appears:

The MIDI Meaning dialog.
2. Turn on MIDI Meaning by activating the check box labelled “Active”.

3. Use the value fields to set up the effect of the symbols on the Velocity and Length of notes.
The values represent a percentage of the note's current values. Values can be in-/decreased in steps of 25%. For accents, for example, you might set Velocity to 150% and Length to “Off”. For the Staccato symbol you might set the Length to 50% and Velocity to Off. If a value field says “Off”, the corresponding property of the note will not be affected.

4. Click OK to close the dialog.
Now, if you insert one of the note symbols listed in the MIDI Meaning dialog, the corresponding MIDI note will be changed according to your settings. If you want to insert a symbol without affecting its MIDI note, you need to turn off MIDI Meaning first (by deactivating the “Active” checkbox).

• When MIDI Meaning is activated, you can open the dialog by double clicking on any note symbol in the score (provided it’s one of the symbols listed in the MIDI Meaning dialog).

P To restore a note to its original velocity and length, delete the symbols attached to the notes.
