Cat Tale 18: World Class Ears

Hearing is another one of our strengths, at least in comparison with our human companions. We can detect a wider range of sounds and higher-pitched emissions than you do, and that goes for the more limited abilities of the woof, woof species too.

Believe it or not, we can additionally tune in to ultrasound frequencies. As an example of the importance of this for us, some rodents communicate on the ultrasound level.

Rodents are of course known to be fun playthings or delicious snacks, so this is a key factor for us felines. It allows us to be secret agent types by easily becoming aware of their presence and then locating their position. After that is accomplished, you can surely guess what follows.

Not wanting to bore you with the many more technical aspects of this subject, I’ll conclude by noting that when taking into account all mammals, us cats are among the world leaders in terms of our hearing capacity.

That should get our whole species one of those special ribbons, trophies, gold medals, or things like that, wouldn’t you say! Or how about at least an “honorable mention” and a little publicity on the world news scene, huh?

Nope, nothing. Nothing at all. Our top-level abilities quietly and sadly remain unknown to the majority of the not so finely tuned ears of those around us.
