Cat Tale 19: Super Sniffers

Finally, not only can we hear well, but we can smell well too. Actually, we smell good, but also we smell well, if you know what I mean. It’s a difference of being neat and clean versus the ability to accurately identify odors floating around us.

This fantastic characteristic complementing our extraordinary hearing devices can serve to warn us of potential danger, alert us to being close to some delicious food sources, and let us know about toxic elements where we are.

In addition, because of our sensitivity to pheromones, we take advantage of this hereditary resource to communicate the limits of our territories as well as knowing when we’re perhaps dangerously entering the domains of others. This is all done by skillful urine spraying and other markings with our scent glands.

That’s some pretty refined and impressive smelling talents, wouldn’t you agree!

And by the way, this is also the reason we go so crazy over catnip. This contains a chemical compound called nepetalactone that comes from the leaves and stems of a plant that is a member of the mint family (nepeta cataria). The smell of this substance is simply irresistible to us and makes us happy and excited like nothing else to be found growing anywhere.

Whenever you’d like to get a little of that alluring catnip and spread it around our home, we’d be very grateful for your kindness.
