Cat Tale 34: Voicing Our Feelings

Changing now to some more pleasant and lighthearted topics related to our feline behavior, how about a little body language? Are you into that kind of silent, communicative action? From what I studied in my class on mammal behavior when I was still very little, it appears that all of us mammalian creatures on the planet are naturals at this form of expressing ourselves.

I’ll begin by mentioning that we may use certain variations of voice patterns to help you understand our desires or state of mind. These include the ever-popular happy purring, the well-known hissing that means you’d better not bother us at the moment, and some occasional growling or snarling that are used for the more convincing you’d-better-leave-us-alone effects.

If you’ve been around cats at all, you’ve most likely heard all of these alternatives many times. I have no doubt that your preferences among these options are solely oriented toward that soft, sweet, little kitty motor that starts humming deep inside of us and vibrates throughout our whole body when we’re really content and satisfied with life’s current circumstances.

You see, we have this special purring mechanism that was exclusively developed for us felines. This includes many of the huge cats, like the lions and tigers. This device can be turned on at any time, at any place, and with anyone. And it includes a sensitive volume dial that can be cranked up to the max when extraordinarily happy conditions justify it. That’s a very high-tech kind of gadget we’ve got installed in our system, wouldn’t you say!
