Cat Tale 35: Tall Tails and Perky Ears

You probably know that body language involves more than non-verbal noise emissions and includes the expressive movements of certain body parts too.

For example, our tails are a key indicator not only of our mood but also our position in the social hierarchy, if you are lucky enough to have more than one kitty living with you.

When our tail is hanging down and has a limp appearance, we’re possibly feeling a bit dejected. Or maybe we’re not feeling anything at all, but are in a normal, automatic-pilot kind of disposition.

On the other hand, when our tail is held high up in the air, then you can assume that we’re feeling good about ourselves and life in general. Or in the case of a home with several of us felines living there, the cat with the tall tail is often the one among the group who’s in charge. He’s showing his authority by the raising of his power symbol that faithfully follows his every move.

The ears, nose, and tongue also play a role in the non-verbal options we have available. The ears are the easiest things to figure out since there are just two basic positions that you need to pay attention to.

If we’ve got them pushed back and flattened out, as mentioned earlier, then we’re probably in a defensive, attacking, or general alert mode, and it’s best not to mess with us at that moment, okay? Whatever the case might be when our ears are down, our full attention must be given to the subject of interest to us, and distractions by any other creature are not advisable or appreciated.

On the other hand, if our ears are perked up, we are showing clear signs of our relaxed state and openness to the environmental surroundings. Then you know that everything is in order, and making contact with us would not be rejected or received in a negative manner.
