Aikido - Japanese martial art meaning ‘way of the harmonious spirit’
Aiki-jutsu - martial sub system derived from Ju-jutsu
Bagua - Chinese internal fighting system
bodo/bo-jutsu - Japanese fighting system using a stick
Bokken - Wooden practice sword
Boxing - Western fighting art now a sport
Budo - Japanese code of ethics for the samurai
Bujutsu - Samurai weaponry
Chan/Zen - Buddhist sect
Chin-a - Locking and throwing using the joints
Chi/Ki - Energy that martial artists use to perform certain feats
Chin Ping (or Qing Ping) - Chinese ancient sword fighting system
Dadoe - Chinese weapon something like a European halberd
Dan/duan - black belt grades (normally starting at one and progressing up to ten or in some cases higher)
Goshin Jutsu - style of Ju-jutsu
Hakama - Divided skirt worn by the samurai and some martial artists
Hapkido - Korean martial art
Iaido - Japanese art of drawing and cutting using a katana (Samurai sword)
I-ching - Book of Changes
Jodo - Japanese art of stick fighting
Judo - Competition sport derived from Ju-jutsu ‘ gentle or compliant way’
Ju-jutsu - Japanese fighting system used by the samurai
Jukka Ryu - Style of Ju-jutsu
Karate - Okinawan fighting system ‘ way of the empty hand’
Kata - series of pre planned moves involving one or more people
Katana - Samurai sword
Kobudo - Mastery of some of the Japanese weapons
Kung fu - General term covering several hundred different Chinese styles of fighting
Kyudo - Japanese archery
Mizong - Style of kung fu ‘lost track boxing’
Mochzoe - Form of meditation
Ninja/Ninjutsu - Person who does ninjutsu/ art of stealth incorporating a fighting style used by spies/assassins in Japan
Nunchuka - Rice flails used as a weapon
Preying Mantis - Style of kung fu
Sai - farming implement adapted for fighting, looks like a big fork with a long central tine
Shaolin - A Buddhist temple in China birth place of Chan Buddhism and centre of excellence for kung fu, also a style of kung fu
Shodakan - Sub style of aikido
Sifu (Chinese)/Sensie (Japanese) - Instructor or teacher
Simu (Chinese) - Mother Teacher
Tai Chi - Style of kung fu using slow movements and considered beneficial for health
Tae Kwon Do - Korean art similar to karate ’ way of the hand and foot’
Taoism - Chinese religious / philosophical system
Tomiki - Kenji Tomiki founder of Tomiki style aikido
Tonfa - farming implement used for fighting, long wooden block with a handle on one side
Xing-i - Internal style of kung fu
Yoga - Indian system of movements for health and meditation
Yoshinkan - Style of aikido
