Step 5 Using LinkedIn for Landing Your Dream Job
Lastly, a not-to-miss guide which demonstrates the value of using a LinkedIn account to network with other professionals to achieve your goal of landing your dream job.
We will dive into the 5-step action plan in a minute.
Firstly, and before you do anything else, there are two especially important tasks you need to attend to:
Task number 1: Get a LinkedIn profile
Statistics show that only 13% or less of job seekers land a job through the conventional online application process. Most applicants (nearly 90% of them) are hired through other means, often by word of mouth or simply by knowing the right person who can put in a word for you.
In other words, you need to network, get to know people in the industry, online via social media or offline through talking with people. Socializing and finding ways to get to know staff in the company where that dream position is. You need to be seen by real people.
The most efficient way to be seen by real people, ultimately the employer or the hiring manager where the dream position is, is to set up a LinkedIn profile.
Without a LinkedIn profile you are at a huge disadvantage to those who indeed have got one, as most recruiters use LinkedIn to look for prospects when a position comes up.
Armed with a LinkedIn profile and a great resume you stand well prepared to land the dream job.
I have set aside a separate chapter at the end of this guide which shows you in detail all the benefits of a LinkedIn profile and how you set it up. (If you want to, you can jump right down to that chapter and set up your LinkedIn profile first.)
Task number 2: Only apply to positions you are qualified for
Now, this one may seem obvious, but it is quite common that job seekers apply to just about every job opportunity that comes up, regardless of their skills level. However, if you instead only apply to jobs where the job description matches your own skills and qualifications, you stand a much better chance of landing the job.
How do you determine if you are qualified for a specific position?
Here is how: Read the job description thoroughly and make a note of what skills, duties, and qualifications the employer is requesting.
If your skills, your employment background, and your qualifications match up with the job description, and you can demonstrate this in your job application, you stand a much better chance of convincing the employer that you are the right person for the job.
You simply target the job that is right for you.
We will later in this guide discuss in detail how to target the right job and how to write a “Targeted Resume”.
