What Is Knowledge Without Application?

“An intangible impulse of thought can be transmuted into material rewards by the application of known principles.”

— Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich

“Wisdom is knowing what to do; virtue is doing it.”

— David Jordan, Scientist

I don’t care what you know or what you think you know. If you’re not applying it, you’re not doing anything. It really grinds my gears when people say they know something but it’s clear that they are not applying it in their life. Think of your own life: You may know that doing something randomly nice for a loved one will make them happy, but you are not applying it. There is always room for improvement. It takes a strong — and humble — person to recognize their own flaws and then take the initiative to make improvement in those areas. Think about knowledge you may have that could make your life better if you were to start applying it. Perhaps you should be exercising more, eating healthier, investing in yourself, taking time to relax and take deep breaths (especially when stressed). Look into your business and career and see what could be improved on or adjusted. There’s probably a minimum of 15 things everyone “knows” but isn’t “applying” in their life, that could make them happier, healthier, and richer than ever before. Knowledge is power only when it is applied.

You wouldn’t walk in shoes that have untied laces. You wouldn’t put your hand in fire. You know that doing so would not have a pleasant outcome. Yet we know if we eat unhealthy foods, we will gain excess weight. We know that, if we do not buckle our seatbelts, it increases our chance of getting hurt in an accident. We know smoking cigarettes is bad for us, and we know drinking and driving is not safe. Yet every year, thousands die from not applying the knowledge they have been taught, even knowing the possible repercussions of their actions.

“Knowledge will not attract money, unless it is organized and intelligently directed through practical plans of action with a definite end of accumulation of money. Lack of understanding of this fact has been the source of confusion to millions of people who falsely believe knowledge is power, when all it really is, is potential power. It becomes power only when and if it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.”

— Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich.
