AMARA (CONT’D)

I love you and I know you love me too, so why don’t we get married before the baby comes?

Amara finally gets Emeka’s attention with the words ‘get married before the baby comes’, as he looks away, and gazes on her. Emeka laments:

EMEKA

But we were careful. I made sure I was careful.

Amara grows mad, and yells:

AMARA

For the love of God, what does that even mean?

EMEKA I... I'm...

(sighs)

We did not plan this, that’s why I'm in shock.

AMARA

Shock?! What nonsense!!

Amara exclaims, both hands fisted, like she’s about to throw a few punches at Emeka.

EMEKA

(softly and timidly)

We have been careful. That is why I'm... shocked.

Emeka whispers the last word as if he’s afraid of anyone else hearing him. We slowly move back to the table where Uche and Chioma are seated, having dinner. Chioma navigates the fork heavy with rice, into her mouth. She chews.

CHIOMA

The food here taste bad, tonight.

Chioma stares at the table where Amara and Emeka are seated, raising their voices at each other. She tries to catch up with what the pair are arguing about, but both of their voices are indistinct. We return to the table where Emeka and Amara argues.

AMARA (furious)

Don't even say that.

AMARA (CONT’D)

You talk about it like it’s such a terrible thing to carry your baby.

Amara is about to throttle Emeka, but she opts for a calmer approach -- SILENCE, which is how the rest of the dinner date ends, and Emeka knows he is in hot water.
