The aftermath.

Malenkov’s men tried to use the other car to escape, but all were killed when a grenade exploded inside. The fire brigade were called to cut open the skip and rescue ‘D.I. Marsh’. They assumed he was still alive, but were concerned he might have been injured, because of his silence. When they saw the open sewer, they realized he had escaped, but why hadn’t he made contact with his colleagues?

Earlier that morning Max had had an interesting telephone conversation with The Chief Constable of Scotland Yard. It was difficult to get his attention. Apparently he was a busy man, but not too busy to listen to ‘D.I. Marsh’ and discuss the capture and arrest of Yaakov Malenkov, that evening.

Max explained he could not trust giving this information to the local force in case it got back to Malenkov. His life depended on total secrecy.

The police had also lost contact with the young girl who claimed to be ‘Marsh’s’ informant, codename Starlight. She had directed the police to the scene warning them of the armed criminals. Her phone was now switched off and there was no longer a GPS trace.

The Chief Constable assessed the incident as a total disaster for the force as four of his men had died. The press would have a field day and he had nothing but some cash to show for it.
