During the brief flight from Torino, Northern Italy to Gatwick and the taxi ride to the Hilton, Carla considered how she would try to find Max. This led her to think about his plans for the future.
 It was clear Max and the girl were in hiding, even though they had genuine identities now. With the amount of money they had abroad, there was nothing to keep them in the UK. They would quickly flee to a country where they could live well, a country that does not pry into residents’ affairs, perhaps Panama.
Her eyes filled with tears at the thought that they might have left already. She must find him within a week, or she would be too late. Max would know any pursuers would follow the money, so he would break the trail. It could be years before he became traceable that way.
To break out of her depression, she reasoned he and the girl would be together at the safe address they had always used, right on the doorstep of their robberies. Probably a million people lived in that region and statistically, there was no reasonable prospect of bumping into him, but she had to try.
