Chapter 18
Where is the Mind?
None of the readers might believe, but I do believe in what I have written here!
I had witnessed a scene where, my father, a retired Engineer performed the Out-of-body act to his inquisitive visitor. He could shut his faculties for a minute. (Eyes struck to one position, the body appeared stiff) and witness a scene where his visitor was asked to go far away from visible range.
Upon the return of the visitor, my father could tell what was the scene the visitor visited, the conversations and actions as those he was physically present.
He was not a Yogi performing Yoga Sadhana, but some one who had very high blood pressure from the time k=he knew. This does not affect him in any way execpt insurance companies refused life insurance policies to him.
He had the out-of - Body experience when he was young whenever he had sever stress. That was involuntary. After his sixty years of age, he could perform it at will.
There are several situations that the Energy body could get detached and wander independently. Severe health problem, certain chemical substances which when used repeatedly, would lead to severe ailments. Or one or the other of pure mind state obtained from prescribed spiritual sadhanas.
K: Are you Building a model of mind???
Me: Yes, its graphical representation of the mind follows. When I have no way to prove what I imagine I need to build a model from several instances such as what I witnessed, whatever I read in medical journal, scriptures ( especially that of SIDDA saints). for convincing me self and my readers.
These days more people knew about computers including the way it works. The anatomy of human suggested by Saints compares well with computing systems.
Brain and other body parts can be compared to Electronic (visible) parts or hardware of a computer and the soul body or spiritual body can be thought of as, the software that runs the computer.. Brain with its spinal chord and nerve network can be thought of the Processor.
K: It sounds acceptable.
MIND STATES
Me: There are five conscious states of mind. First state is the waking state, Here, we are awake. Our sensors give our mind informations that it receives like sound, smell, vision, touch sense and taste.
When are awake, our awareness or consciousness is said to be in WAKING conscious. Most of the time we use our knowledge in the memory and take decisions and act upon.
K: So you mean to say that our waking and sleeping states are change of mind states?.
Me: After hours being in waking state or after a tiresome work, our body needs rest. We enter sleep. The our consciousness or awareness moves to a corresponding state in the mind.
When we are asleep, the messages from sensors do not reach conscious mind. But the subconscious mind receives some of them and acts on its own whatever knowledge is transferred from conscious mind. If there is nothing, normally it does not act.
We have some fears, urgencies, importance attached to us. These are in subconscious mind. (A students sleeps off, midway, in a class. A harsh voice of a teacher wakes the student from sleeping state). We suddenly wake-up and come to waking state,’’
Deep sleep is the next state. When the body is tied or fatigued, we enter into sleep state, If were sleepless for long and more tired we enter into Deep sleep. Here, subconscious mind does not come for help..
It require a lot of effort to being a person from deep-sleep to waking state (via sleep state).
K: In the epic Ramayan, brother of Ravan, Kumbakarna is said to get into such a sleep state.
Me: . I have read, long ago, in some medical journal about a patient who was under anesthesia, underging a very long surgical procedure. After hours after surgery when he came to waking consciousness, he could recall most of the discussions among the surgeons during this time. I understand several such incidents are reported in Science channels recently. These convey an idea that the physical sensors in the body is connected to the corresponding interfaces in the spiritual body. That combination works well in normal state. In deep sleep while bodily sensor does not communicate but the energy body receive directly.
Certain physical conditions (Ill health), administering anesthesia, certain other chemical substances and spiritual Practices cause the Spiritual body to be detached temporarily from physical body.
For our discussion, we have two mind Information storage. Conscious mind and subconscious mind. Subconscious, depending on the internalization of knowledge. mind can work even as one is asleep.
At that stage neither the physical sensors convey an thing to the soul body nor Soul body can command the physical parts.
Chinese thinkers talk about an invisible silver thread connecting physical body and the soul body. The death occurs when this thread breaks which makes the reunion impossible.
Yogies must be knowing the method of keeping the connection for long periods of time.
In my judgment the medical condition Comatose is a typical Samadhi state of a Yogi.
K: What is the role of Brain then?
Me: In my. model, the brain acts as an interface between body parts (for actions upon a command from mind), the five sense organs to our spiritual body.
The spiritual body holds the mind store, talks to the physical body. At the same time, interfaces the five sensory sensors to the rest of the objects around us.
This much is enough for our current discussion. If some one among the readers has a convincing model of Inner and outer minds, they can ignore the above discussion.
For our discussion, we have two mind. Information storage. Conscious mind and subconscious mind. Subconscious, depending on the internalisation of knowledge. mind can work even one is asleep.
