When it was realized that a Polaco threatened to become Presidente, the other rivals started mobilizing, and soon the school rivaled national election campaigns. “Vote for a Costa Rican. Don’t sell out,” the rival ads said.

Some teachers asked not to vote for me. “This is a Catholic country, and the Liceo is its main high school. How can we allow a Polaco to represent them?”

said the Social Studies teacher.

In the final election, I won by one vote. I was now popular, I was able to change my situation, but at the same time, I was no longer me.
