Ode To Charon

One Second

by

Robby Richardson

As I lie here breath in...one…two…three…these hazy visions seem to overpower me

Father of Truth and the Prince of Lies across a checkered battle line

Good vs. Evil, Black vs White, 64 squares, 28 soldiers

At the edge of nothing and above a valley of the broken

The soft echo of a paddle from a ride costing two silver tokens

A giant clock above a mountain peak, the tock is gone from the face of the clock

People climbing and crawling, grabbing and fallen

Reaching for a friend temptation is calling

Dying for time, a foe in disguise pulling the wool over our eyes

A battle for a soul that is coveted so which truth could win in simply four blows

The game like our story needs to be told

Scatter Charon’s tokens for all the dead and broken

Scatter the “blood tokens” for the lies truth has spoken

You swore you wouldn’t leave me like all the rest

You left me behind there's nothing left…always second best

Truth changes the enemy, a dime a dozen lies a final dream denied

Just a product from a world so cold from a poison so old from a time long ago

What if I stand and disagree when I bleed can I be me

As I speak, I speak to all

How do you know a man when all you ever see is a quarter of the real man

Lies and empty promises fill my ears with sparkling diamonds in my eyes

That are twisted with the riches of fork tongued lies

I love you Truth from my first breath in the morning and even when the sky is burning

From Charon’s greed to the lungs that I breath but in the end all I can be is me

You had your moment, your time is over, it’s my time to breath

It’s my time to dream...dream to the sky...dream for a moment...dream for that day

Dream to the stars even for that one second

Father of Truth looked down at me talks about the poison that I shall bring

The poison that effects every human being

This battle over me lasted an eternity and at the end of the day

Can’t you make your peace some other way

The final question the Father simply asks, do you deserve a chance

In a world so cold, I froze…no…no one deserves to go

In fact, where even further from home

With one final look, Truth moved his rook, CHECKMATE yelled lies and cried

“A foolish move from a Father so wise”

I’m tired of walking this broken road, tired of society’s hold

Curse this broken road...I stand alone

The ground crumbled in one second I had lost it all

Oh how the mighty fall and just when my fear began to appear…poof, it disappeared

The End
