Chapter 26

Werewolf Cave

Berkshire was a quiet little town spotted with quaint little houses and shops. Berkshire was a beautiful place to live, small farmhouses dotted the countryside and farmers made a living with their land and farm animals. There were spooky woods that surrounded the countryside. Urban legend has it that there in those woods lies a cave that houses a pack of werewolves and at night the werewolves come out and attacked the farms and ripped apart the cows that were grazing in the pasture and people in the village were getting mauled.

Back in the early 1700s before Berkshire was even a town it nothing but grassy fields and woods that a traveler from London who came over from London had been bitten and came to Berkshire and mauled some local villagers turning them into werewolves and now, they have been living there in the woods in a cave known as Werewolf Cave. The villagers were quite superstitious and truly believed that werewolves existed so they went out before dark and took a hammer and nails and nailed wolfbane to their doors to protect themselves from the werewolves and those who chose not to protect themselves well their fates were sealed. Legend has it that the werewolves were the biggest, most fearsome creatures that ruled the woods and that when the moon was at its fullest, they would transform. It was the year 1800 and it was a quiet night in the little village of Berkshire, the villagers were sleeping quietly when one of the villagers was woken up to his wife screaming, he came running over to her to find her bent their dead son. He was lying there in a puddle of his own blood and his throat was ripped out. He had a long bloody claw mark down his chest and every bone in his body was broken as if he had been thrown about like a rag doll. The death of their son was the start of the murders in Berkshire. It was sad in the villagers of Berkshire gathered together for a funeral, after the funeral, there was a small gathering in the town square and everyone brought a potluck dinner. There was dinner and dancing that when well into the night and the werewolves were watching them from the woods. And on that night, it was a full moon. The villagers quickly left everything but it was too late. A creepy howl was heard from the base of the woods, then another and another, soon the whole pack was howling. The villagers could hear running and crashing through the woods. They ran as fast as they could back to their houses, the werewolves caught up with them and lunged at them knocking them down, some were ripping their throats out others were biting the villagers. The villagers were writhing in pain from the venom of the werewolf bite, they were twisting and turning and kicking in the ground. Their bones started to crack as they began to transform. The village square looked like a murder scene blood was everywhere, there were torn limbs, bloody bodies with their throats ripped out thrown into trees and there were puddles of blood everywhere. Back in the village the other villagers who made back safely placed wolfbane on their door and the others who didn’t well they got attacked. One villager who lived near the town square was preparing his gun, his name was Wolfgang Bertram and he’d lived there all his life and he lost his parents to the werewolves when he was young and he was raised by his uncle who now has passed on. The thing about Wolfgang is he and his family were special, they were werewolf killers, they hunted down werewolves and killed them this gift ran through their family. Wolfgang lost his parents to werewolves they were on a hunt together and came across a pack of werewolves and well they didn’t make it. Now Wolfgang has a score to settle with the werewolves and we were set on getting justice for his parents so he made his life’s mission to kill the werewolves.

And how do you kill werewolves? With quicksilver or better known as mercury. He spent the whole day making mercury bullets and he made a knife out of mercury and made a bone handle. He gathered his gun and his gear and he placed wolf bane around his neck and went off into the night. Wolfgang followed the sounds of the howls and screams that went on through the night, the howling made the hairs on his arms stand on end but like a soldier in war, he carried on focusing on his mission. The werewolves had made it into town and were knocking down doors and mauling people. Wolfgang raised his gun at a werewolf nearby he aimed at its heart and fired, “BOOM” the gun went off and the bullet hit the werewolf it let out a howl then it fell, Wolfgang walked over to it and kicked in its side to make sure it was dead. The howl and the sound of the gun alerted the other werewolves and scared them off and they ran into the night howling over their lost brother. Wolfgang heard a faint “help me please” it was coming from a small child that had been bitten. Wolfgang hand a choice to make kill this poor young child or somehow save him.

The only way to cure a werewolf of being a werewolf was death, but he couldn’t kill a young child, does he let roam free and go to the pack? The boy was becoming worse and he was running out of time. Wolfgang ran outside and grabbed as much wolfbane as he could off of people’s doors and brought it back to the house, he grabbed a pot and threw the wolfbane in it with water he boiled the wolfbane and waited until it was done and turned into tea. He carefully put in a cup and ran to the little boy and told him to sit up and drink the tea, the boy did what he was told and they waited. They waited for about an hour, the boy stopped his transformation and he was normal again. “Thank you, kind sir, for saving me. The little said graciously. “Stay here and hide. Wolfgang ordered I will come back for you, I promise. The little boy nodded and did what he was told. Wolfgang had another choice to make, either kill the werewolves and get revenge and justice for his parents or save the werewolves and turn them human again. His gut was saying shoot them, shoot them they took your parents. What was the right thing to do killing them or saving them? Do I use the wolfbane tea on them like I did that little boy? Is it going to work? Some of these werewolves were old especially the leader he was the biggest, strongest, werewolf.

Who knows the tea would work on them. Wolfgang made the choice his mother was in his head telling him to follow his heart and forgive and do the right thing and the right thing to do was to save the werewolves and use the tea. Wolfgang made a huge cauldron of wolfbane tea and he waited until it was done and fully steeped and he took a canteen and filled it with the wolfbane tea and grabbed a syringe he borrowed from an old doctor friend from town and headed into the woods and followed a deer trail that led straight to Werewolf Cave; he headed into the opening of the cave being very cautious where he

stepped so he didn’t wake the sleeping werewolves. He squatted on the ground and he filled the syringe with the wolfbane tea and then he set pulled the syringe and got it ready and went to the first werewolf and injected all of it into it. At first, the werewolf thrashed and growled, and howled, and was morphing back into a human again. Wolfgang could hear his bones cracking and a horrendous sound it gave him chills, and he watched his face go from wolf back to human again and it was a hideous site when he was finally done, he was human again. Wolfgang went around doing this to the other werewolves and they went through the same thing. When they were done, they were human again. He did it they were all cured every single one of them even the alpha male was back to normal. All the werewolves who were now human followed Wolfgang back to the village and he grabbed each of their clothes. He brought the little boy's parents back to him and they reunited.

Wolfgang Bertram became the town hero they held a feast and celebration in his honor and they even made a statue to honor his bravery that stands in Berkshire to this very day.
