Chapter 27

Wendigo

In the mountains of Colorado lies a campground called Camp Lakewood this was the hot spot for campers and hunters. The campground was huge and offered all sorts of amenities. It nestled in the Colorado Mountains in a town called Caldwell. The population was just over two million people and it was a nice quiet little town where nothing ever rarely happened until recently. The people and even tourists were disappearing one by one without an explanation. The locals blamed it on the legend of the Wendigo and it was grabbing people from the campgrounds and dragging them back to its lair to eat them. Others of the town blamed on weather or plain stupidity and having enough knowledge for being in the woods, even one person blamed it on a bear that roams the woods. Not many people in the town took much stock into the legend of the Wendigo for they thought it wasn’t real and such creatures didn’t exist. The last known record of a Wendigo was back in the early 1600s when the Algonquian Indians settled in the mountains and woods of Caldwell before the first settlers ever landed here. The legend goes something like this, the Wendigo is a terrifying creature that appears in Algonquian Native American legend who devours human flesh. As the legend goes that the Wendigo was once a Native American warrior who made a deal with the devil and gave the devil his soul and transformed into a Wendigo who still lives in the mountains of Colorado. It was early summer and it was hot and school had just let out and Sasha and her family were going to camp at the campground in the mountains at Camp Lakewood, she had been so excited ever since her parents told her and she couldn’t wait to spend some much needed time with her family. They packed their bags and put their things in the R.V. and headed off to the campground which was about a two-hour drive into the mountains.

The family made it there right around nightfall and they were all tired from the long drive so they paid the manager and went to the R.V. campground and parked the R.V. and settled in for the night. The family made a quick meal on the grill and Sasha and her friend Baily begged her parents to stay in a tent, her parents agreed but they asked them to stay near the R.V. so the girls agreed. Sasha’s father helped the girls set the tent and they settled into the tent for the night, the girls built a small fire and were talking and telling stories and talking about the legend of the Wendigo and how they didn’t think it was real. After about two hours of chatting the girls grew tired and went to bed. It was around midnight when the girls heard loud crashing through the woods, followed by a terrifying animal-like scream. It made their hair stand on end and gave them chills. The girls sat up in bed and watched a horrible shadow come through the campground, it had an animal-like head with antlers and a human-like body, it was bare-chested wearing old pants that looked it was made from deerskin and his shoes looked like moccasins. Sasha and Baily could hear low guttural growling and it was getting closer, it moved in the dark shadows trying to stay concealed, but once it came into the moonlight it showed its whole self and it looked like something from your worst nightmares. It went to one of the R.V.S ripped the door right off its hinges and it walked right in; it took its victim which happened to a man who was up here for hunting. He dragged him out by the collar of his shirt; the man was yelling and screaming. Baily and Sasha watched in fright as this creature drug off its victim into the darkness of the woods. First, they heard nothing but silence but then a blood-curdling scream came from the woods then it was quiet. The girls mustered the courage to come out of the tents and follow the Wendigo into the woods, they followed a deer trail into a clearing where they saw the Wendigo standing over its victim, the man’s throat had been slashed, his chest had a huge hole in it and then the girls saw the creature eating the man’s heart it was tearing chunks out it. Just when they thought it was done it tore the man limb from limb and hid the body parts. The girls ran back to the campground and pounded on R.V. yelling “Mom, Dad, help!” Her parents came out tired and confused about all the yelling. “Girls, what’s wrong? Her parents asked. “We saw a man that got dragged off by some ungodly creature and it was eating him. Mom, we think it was the Wendigo. Her parents gave her the oh you’re crazy there is no Wendigo look. We’re telling the truth come on we’ll show you the girls answered in unison.” Her father grabbed in shotgun and flash night and the girls showed him where they saw the man and Wendigo. “Dad it was here in camp then it drug the man into the woods and ate him. Sasha explained. Sasha, her father said sternly. There is no such thing as Wendigo there has been one here in forever. Just then, they all heard a loud crash, followed by an animal- like scream, the girls showed the father where the body was. There were massive amounts of blood but no trace of a body it looked the body was dragged off. The crashing was getting louder they could tree branches breaking, it was getting closer and closer. Sasha and Baily could feel eyes on them but they had no idea where it was coming from, they were being hunted and they didn’t even know it. Look girls it has been a bear attack, maybe the man from the R.V. got spooked by a sound came out to investigate and snuck up on a bear and the bear mauled him. The father said. Dad, this wasn’t a bear we saw it with our own eyes. Sasha replied. Girls, it’s late you could have seen anything and your eyes were just playing tricks on you. Her father countered. Just then the Wendigo jumped down from the trees right in front of them, it was growling and snarling, the girls screamed. Run girls, run. “the father yelled. The girls bolted out of the woods and headed back to the campground. They heard the father yell; a shot rang out and then with a swipe of the creature's long nails it slashed her father’s throat and drag him into the woods into its lair. The girls were huffing and puffing but happy to back into the safety of the campground at least for now. The Wendigo chased them, the girls could hear growling, grunting, and howling behind them it was closing in on them, it was so close they feel its breath on their necks. It reached out with its long arms and it grabbed Baily she could feel its long claws dig into her ankle she screamed and then kicked it off, Sasha helped her friend get up. They ran into the R.V. and her mother what happened, her mother didn’t believe them. “But mama daddy is dead, the Wendigo took him. Sasha May Tyler. Her mother said firmly there is no such thing as a Wendigo.

Mom it exists and it’s taken two people already and we’ve seen at least twice and we know it's coming for us next. Go to bed girls. Her mother replied. We’ll discuss this further in the morning.” The girls went to bed but neither of them slept a wink, how could they after they just went through. They couldn’t believe it. The next couple of nights were rough more and more attacks on the campground have occurred and more people have turned up missing. That next day the girls went and she and a park ranger long with the cops searched an and her father but no traces of them showed up except for blood. They followed a blood trail to an old mining cave but the trail stopped there. About after a week, they gave up. The girls knew that their dad and man had to be in that cave, so that next day the girls went searching for her father and followed the trail that led to the cave and went in, it was dark and damp and smelled of death and decay, and there it was there was the creature sleeping soundly quietly back to the campground. That night the Wendigo attacked again taking more victims this he took the campground manager he drug him to the woods slashed his throat and tore him apart, tearing chunks off his body. The cops came back yet again but they blamed all the attacks on a bear. The girls knew what it was. The mother decided it was time to pack up and leave the campground. That night they were going to leave, they were going down the trail that led to the highway and all of sudden they were hit from the side by some huge and it left a dent in the side of the R.V. the big vehicle got knocked over and the mom was dead on impact. The girls were feeling dazed and confused knew they had to get their wits about them and get the hell out of there and to safety. They kicked opened the door and popped it open, the Wendigo was on the other side of the R.V. trying to get in, the girls snuck off into the forest without being noticed. They ran to the manager’s building and they locked and barricaded the doors and windows and spent the night in there praying they wouldn’t get found. All they hear were screams from the people in the campgrounds, this Wendigo wasn’t killing just for food he was killing for the pure enjoyment of doing it. The next morning the campground was empty there was a soul left but they were the only survivors left and they were young but they were strong. The girls didn’t know what do but they knew they had to stop it but how? How in the hell do you even kill a Wendigo? They had to find a way to stop this thing. The girls remembered something from the legend and how a Native American from an old Algonquian tribe lived on an old Native American Indian reservation near the campground so the girls decided to go and see him and it takes them at least two hours or more to go there. The girls raided the other R.V.S for food and water, snacks, sleeping bags, clothes whatever they could find, they found an empty R.V. they jumped in threw their gear in the back and left and headed towards the Indian Reservation, it took them exactly two hours to get there. The girls turned down the long gravel driveway and Native American Indians were watching as the two strangers entered their land which traditionally isn’t allowed. Sasha parked the R.V. and the girls got out and walked around the land
