SOMA | The Meme Dump

JEREMY

It’s a Rat King.

LEVON

A what?

JEREMY

A Rat King. It’s a monster that forms when a nest of baby rats get tangled in their own tails. If they’re still able to scavenge, over the years the individuals become fused together, like a tree enveloping a fence post. Eventually they form a stumbling multiheaded abomination, bereft of elegance or predictability. A fucking Rat King!

LEVON

Poor thing.

JEREMY

There’s nothing musical about that creature. It clammers around this property eating my wiring. It's really obstructing my record. None of my snares have been effective.

Jeremy repeats “snares” into a microphone. His words echo around the train yard in and out of phase. The damaged amplifiers shriek with electronic feedback. Jeremy grimaces and throws off his headphones. He takes a deep breath and chews more of his medication. He whispers to himself.

JEREMY

Just a little longer...

LEVON

Jeremy?

JEREMY

It’s no threat to you, Levon! It’s just a nuisance. My amplifiers seem to aggravate it…
