Book Description HTML
In 1957, a caste conflict broke out between the two major castes of South Tamil Nadu, the Devars and the Devendra Kula Velalas. The trigger for the violence was the Assembly by-elections that were to be held after the resignation of Muthuramalingath Devar. Muthuramalingath Devar objected to the presence of Emmanuel Sekaran as the representative of Devendrakul voters in the peace negotiation meeting organized by the district administration.Emmanuel Sekaran was killed the next day. Five Devas were shot dead by the police during the operation to arrest the culprits following the carnage. This led to a series of violent incidents. This event, which is etched in the public memory under the name of Muthukulathur Riot, is occasionally revisited by Devars and Devendra clan devotees.
