Many beginners never race because of competition anxiety. And their are a lot of runners who use up so much energy at the starting line worrying about the race to come that they doom themselves to a bad race before they have even begun.
Don't be one of these people, have a complete race-day strategy and gain control over the situation. Rehearse Race Day If you are running a race locally, go to the race site a week or two before. Find the best place to park and try and run at least part of the course. If you can't run the course try and drive it. If the race is out of town be sure to get a course diagram and parking instructions.

00017.jpgBe Prepared

Two days before the race pack your bag with whatever you usually eat and drink before, during and after the race. Get all the kit you are going to wear in one place and make sure you have everything.

Get There Early
Get to your race at least an hour before you start. This will allow you to avoid all the crowds and have time for a relaxing warm-up.
Keep It Fun

Make an effort to speak to your fellow runners, especially ones that have done the race before. I have never come across a runner who isn't willing to share his/her tips that they have picked up. Also talking and joking will calm your nerves.

Remember you are not the only person racing for the first time, their are a lot of other people feeling just as nervous as you. Once the gun goes off and you are on your way all that tension will disappear, get into your stride and enjoy.

PS. No matter how many races you do, you will always get to the line with a certain amount of nervous tension, but that's what makes racing exciting.
