ZANDER’S STORY

“Our Family Board Meeting story began when I read an early version of Jim’s book back in 2013. Soon after, we started our “date days.”

Jim’s idea was simple: what if you dedicated a day to all the key relationships within your family? Business owners and executives do this for their business, but few do it with their key family relationships.

Our kids were 4 and 7 when we started, so there was no resistance to the idea. They quickly fell in love with the Family Board Meeting days. The kids always talked about them and planned for the next one.

We followed Jim’s protocol, focusing on decompression. We didn’t put pressure on having breakthrough conversations, just allowing space for whatever might come up.

But the most powerful board meeting moment happened with my son about 18 months ago. We had a fun, decompressing day followed by a great meal. But it was during the drive home that he brought up the topic of puberty.
