Here are a few ideas to kick it off:

Give a genuine compliment.

“You were laughing so hard when you beat me in go- cart racing today. It reminded me to laugh more. Thank you.”

“You were so persistent today when we were learning to ski. I’m proud of you.”

Offer a sincere apology.

Is there anything you (the parent) would like to ac- knowledge and apologize for? “I know I brushed you off the other day when you were talking to me. I’m sorry about that.”

Share a story of the past.

Discuss your strengths and weakness, things you struggled with.

“When I was your age…”

Use the simplest question of all.

“What was your favorite part of today?” You can follow it with, “Why?”

I cannot express enough how this is not a time for you to discuss what more you need from your child, or to lecture on grades or chores. This is a time to focus on getting deeper.
