(186) Works of Love
Our Duty to be in the Debt of Love
Works of Love Hated and Despised
When many speak of love as truth
They are hated and are despised
Does the thought of love uproot
Something we societally prize?
Dr. King was assassinated
When he spoke of love's equality
His voice was soon eliminated
In defense of the hierarchy
Malcolm X had a revelation
When he went on his first haj
In love saw the end of human isolation
Soon he was shot down in a barrage
Gandhi spoke of love and peace
As the path to liberation
India did find its release
While he found assassination
Jesus too spoke of love and died
Incarnated God as love's middle term
For his acts of love he was crucified
As are the acts themselves in turn
"Love thy neighbor as thyself"
Seems alien to many current congregations
Instead they choose something else
And are consumed in self-congratulation
How many little murders
Do we make happen in each day?
Love denied as if by orders
It's a cause for our dismay
