What Wickedness?

What wickedness inhabits humankind?

What foulness lurks beneath the outer charm?

Our fantasies belie demure demeanour

such innocence is simply self-deception.

The thoughts which oft-times permeate the mind

need not necessarily alarm

yet lurk like some hysterical hyena

the smiling face a mask of pure perception.

Is some extreme malevolence enshrined

which seeks to cause the human spirit harm?

Can we by prayer or worship or novena

put paid to such perverted introspection?

Or is it simply something unrefined

which no amount of effort can disarm?

Each moral lapse, misconduct, misdemeanour

may be because of our own misconception.

Our thoughts and our desires are unaligned

but I for for one remain serene and calm

I walk empowered into the arena

no blame upon my lips, no pre-conception.
