Altar within the Heart
I
HAVE reared an altar firmly within my heart:
A sacred place where I can go apart
And meet my Lord. At every day’s bright start
I come to him and find him waiting there.
Perhaps I come bowed down beneath some care,
Or burdened with a grief too great to bear,
And lo, he lifts that burden, shares that grief—
I know a sudden swift and sure relief,
And am strengthened for my day beyond belief.
It may be that I come at set of sun
Glad to know my work has been well done,
Or with some spiritual victory I have won;
And lo, a love, wide as the sea is wide,
Awaits for me there at my altar’s side,
Where my Lord abides, and ever will abide.
