REMEMBER

Chinese pagodas and silver birch trees
Hold sway in the backyard
Of love’s buried footprints.
Remember the stolen moments
Of grace we captured?
I wrapped them in a feeling.
You spent them like a sailor.
Remember when we thought
We were the raiders of the lost ark?
We found it, held it to our hearts
And thought we had the key,
But unsigned covenants
Came back to haunt us.
Love’s emaciated ghost
Signed us to the secrets in our blood.
Our whispers built a shrine
At the altar of lost dreams.
Remember how we tried
To keep Pandora’s box closed?
I spilled my drink by accident
Then you smashed the glass.
You drove the splinters through my soul.
This painting of us
Flashes like a neon juke joint
Fading in a blaze of ebony.
Remember when.
Remember how.
That was then.
This is now.
I remember you.
Please remember me.
