RAINSONG

A sudden hush of expectation.
I feel strange exultation.
Then with a rush,
Down comes the rain.
It is rushing over roof-tiles,
Gushing down the drain.

My heart sings as I hear it,
For to me the rain is music.
Forever I’ll remember
The music of its rushing
Down the drainpipes and the gutters, And the drumming of my heartbeat With the rainsong of its flushing.

Forever I’ll remember
The warmth of our skin touching, Of mouths and bodies clinging,
As the rain rushed over roof-tiles Of a tenement in Paddo,
And my babble of emotion,
Locked in the strong arms of my lover. By the magic of the Harbour.
