SWANSONG

The most enchanting poems writ, The most beautiful and magic,
Are poems writ in circumstance Wistful, sad or tragic.

The most romantic song that’s sung, The most haunting refrain,
Is the song a lover sings
When he loves in vain.

The sweetest melody he plays
When a musician is composing, Is the melody he writes
When his heart is breaking.

The sweetest sound in all the world, If myth can be relied on,
Is the only song sung by a swan,

Sung when the swan is dying.
