GOING INTO THE HILLS TO TEACH
A Poem
by Austin Mitchell
The hills beckoned me to teach
A young lad just out of high school
Yes the opportunity to teach
At a very needy school
So here I was an assistant teacher
Thrown before dozens of students
They said I was too young to be a teacher
I was a few years older than most of my students
I taught them everything I knew
And felt I did a good job
Those students told me so, so I knew
That I had done a good job
They still call me teacher
Because they know that I was a good teacher
