GOING INTO THE DIAMOND MOUNTAINS
(Seven character, Yulshi)

The rhyme is chung/kong/pong/song/chong; tones match, and the second and third couplets show parallel expression. The poem begins in a 4.3 pattern but changes to 3.4 in the third couplet.

The spring sleep phrase is not just a quiet nap. It is a sleep full of thought tension and it contrasts with the mushim detachment of the monk. The ilbyŏn (edge of the sky) bell is the evening bell. Ilbyŏn is always associated with twilight.

I follow a verdant road into the clouds; the pavilion arrests the poet’s staff.

Formed with dragon skill—a waterfall of flying snow;

carved with magic blade—soaring peaks in the sky.

The white crane of the Immortal is a thousand years old;

the green pine by the water is three hundred feet tall.

The monk, oblivious of my giddy spring sleep,

rings the evening bell without gracing me a thought.
