Peek-a-Boo
I had eyes to see when I saw you
Never thought to thank the Lord for my vision
Never realized how they saw the things I see until I saw you
The mechanics of how the eyeball rotates
To look at the things capable of turning the peripheral into a firework
A tiny sparkler in a child's hands facing away from them
Only it was more to look right at you
Peering into a flame flickering in yellow, red, orange hues
And still seeing the purple in you
My eyes showed me that the past isn’t the futures blueprint
The past is the past
And that houses are built and torn down everyday
Some are built back up grander ways--some in gentrified ones
Your eyes give me chills
Like what it feels like to sit on the edge of an eye lid as an angel
Your eyes showed me that
this is my perfect journey
Your face gives a look I could only imagine your grandfather making the same one
I’m every bit of mine.
I got Yvonne's eyes at birth--as quickly as it became a welcome gift it doubled as a parting gift
My grandmother's eyes are taking me a while to see out of, but I see her still
Feel her still
Thank you
For the light
For the permission to dream awake in snow globes again
