Bleeding

Remember To Send for Help – Call an Ambulance

Note

  • Do not apply a tourniquet
  • Give nothing to eat or drink

Severe Visible Bleeding

  • If possible wear gloves to help prevent infection
  • If there is an object protruding from the wound, Leave It in Place.

Put padding around the object to help apply pressure before bandaging the limb.

You may use another bandage wrapped in a circular shape to place over the embedded object

Conscious Patient

  • Expose the injury. Cut or remove the clothing
  • Apply direct pressure to the wound (use a pad or gloved hands)
  • Place a pad over the injury and bandage over the pad
  • If possible raise the injured part above the level of the heart to help slow down the bleeding
  • If bleeding persists leave the initial bandage in place and apply another pad and bandage over the top
  • Check circulation below the wound (don’t bandage too tight)
