Genesis 49: The Final Prophecy and Death of Jacob

Jacob foretells what will happen to his twelve sons. Notably, Reuben would not have the first-born’s prominence because he had sex with Jacob’s concubine, Simeon and Levi were too violent, Judah would have the preeminence and through him would come “Shiloh” or the Messiah according to Jews and Christian apologists. Joseph, he prophesied would continue as an earthly power and the other sons would receive their less promising futures. Jacob then gets Joseph's promise that he will be buried with Leah at Mechpelah. Then Jacob dies.

The poem of Jacob is quite beautiful and some say it could not have been written by a shepherd. I say, “rubbish”. Jacob was an intelligent man blessed by God. One of the great blessings I have received in studying Genesis is that I came to the realization that one must believe the stories are true, because if you do not believe they are true, the power of the Word just becomes words.
