The Purpose: to convince the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah that the Old Testament promised and pointed to. This was firstly for the Jews, but also intended for the Gentiles. Matthew was a Jew writing for the Jews first - thus his Gospel is first. Matthew greatly emphasizes the work that Jesus came to earth to do - the will of the Father for man's redemption as prophesied in the Old Testament. The author T.O.D. Johnston taught from Exodus at Paran Baptist Church on Highway 341 / Johnsonville Hwy in Lake City, South Carolina. This commentary is based on the notes he wrote in preparation for the lessons.
