The Facts About Church Giving

Giving Under Grace (The Promise)

When I was in 1st grade, my teacher had us make something to give to our parents. This was 1966, so times were different, there was no political correctness, and no looking for underlying messages behind simple things.

We were given two pieces of clay: one was a strip and the other a ball. We mashed out the ball as flat as we could with our hands, and then laid the strip around the edge, working the seam together as best we could, then with our fingers we made four rests, and voila! We had an ashtray.

There were many lessons here for us as kids, and none of them had to do with smoking. We learned that any big task is easier if we see things as a series of smaller tasks.

We gained the feeling of accomplishment and pride as we saw something we had made by ourselves. But the biggest thing we learned was how good it felt to give this gift to our parents who, even if they didn’t smoke, still treated it as the prize that we thought it was.

And we did this without expecting anything back.

There have always been those who give only to receive in reciprocation or to be acknowledged for their gift, but they limit themselves so much when they do this.
