Chapter 32

The Risen Jesus Meets With His Disciples

The message of the women about seeing the angel and then meeting Jesus circulated among the disciples. That same evening, Jesus appeared to His disciples who were assembled in a room. He said for them to have peace. They were terrified at seeing Him. He assured them that it was He and not a spirit. He told them to come see His hands and His feet and to touch Him because a spirit does not have flesh and bones. They still needed assurance from Jesus, so He took from them some broiled fish and a honeycomb and ate in their presence to comfort them.

After this meeting, the disciples told Thomas, one of the twelve who was not present when Jesus first appeared to them, that Jesus had risen from the dead and had met with them. Thomas would not believe their story. He told them unless he could put his finger in the nail prints of His hands and his hand in the side where He had been pierced with the spear when He was on the cross, he would not believe Jesus had risen from the dead.

After eight days, when all the disciples were assembled, Jesus appeared to them. He spoke to Thomas and told him to put his finger in his nail prints and his hand into His side so that he would not be unbelieving any longer. Thomas replied to Jesus saying, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28) Jesus told Thomas that he believed because he had seen Him. He said blessed are those who believe without seeing.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Heb. 11:6)
