“Nothing,” I said. “I just thought I saw something.” She looked me straight in the eyes. ’I am here to help,

it’s time.’ She was fading away now and I heard her say as if in a whisper ’Not asleep, nor awake, mind the heart you will break’. That’s what she had said when she’d been a mermaid in the water. But who’s heart was she talking about? She was breaking my heart by telling me to leave Peter. She had a sort of loving light around her, but I was feeling annoyed at her for telling me to let him go. It was my dream world after all. Maybe she meant Dave?

But he was just a guy I barely knew, we were just dating. Could you break a person’s heart if you weren’t even together yet?

Peter looked at me with concern in his eyes.

“I’m OK, seriously.” I smiled and grabbed on to him, throwing my arms around him tightly. “Just promise you’ll never leave me.”

“I’ll never leave you,” he whispered in my ear. He felt warm and familiar and new all at the same time.

Somewhere deep inside though, I had that saddened thought that he wouldn’t be here forever. The woman had seemed to know things I didn’t. But I pushed the thought away and just focused on Peter. The man that was making me feel more alive than anything else ever had.

From afar I heard a loud bang. I let go of Peter and turned around. I couldn’t see or hear anything. I turned back to Peter who was becoming translucent, like a ghost.

“Peter?” I said worryingly looking him up and down. “What is it?” he said putting his hand on my cheek,

though his touch was very faint. He was fading away bit by bit but it wasn’t like he noticed it himself.

“Peter!” I shouted. “Don’t go! Don’t go!” Tears welling
